The Battle of Kapitanovka, allied assault, January 1944, 6 battles of 30 turns fixed.

First opponent to post who has not played this scenario before gets the slot.

The scenario can be download from http://webzoom.freewebs.com/kampfgruppe/...anovka.zip

I've only read the briefing and have not seen the oob or map.

On January 25th, Russian Operation "Korsun-Schevchenkovsky" began. The town of Kapitonovka lay directly in the path of the 2nd Ukrainian Front. This town was a road hub that connected to Zvenigorodka, which was the main objective of both Soviet Fronts, attacking toward each other to link up and create the Korsun Pocket. Elements of the 53rd Army and the 155th Tank Brigade/29th Tank Corps/5th GDS Tank Army crashed against the 1st German line held by the 389th Infantry Division. The 389th delayed the Russian advance long enough for elements of the 14th Panzer Division to occupy and defend this vital town. In the end, due to overwhelming pressure and fear of encirclement Kapitanovka was lost to the Russians, but not before putting up fanatical resistance which allowed flanking forces to fall back to relative safety. This operation tries it's best to cover the first 3 hours of initial contact between the Russians and the German defenders of Kapitanovka. Each side has a battle briefing which contains a rule set. The rules are easy to understand and essential in keeping the scenario historically accurate. The rules also force the player to adhere to the realism of a non-stop 1st day attack. In other words, while this is an operation, it is in fact a fluid battle with no pauses. This operation is meant for two- player.

End of May, 2006.
15 games finished with 7 wins for Allies, 5 wins for Axis and 3 draws.
Had one player drop out so only 18 still in the field.
4 players have finished 3 games each so had to start 2 games in round 3 to accomodate the speedy players. Really makes no difference as rules are that each player plays two different players in each round, i.e., 6 games before we make the cut down to players with most tourney points only.
From the speed and current reports on games it looks like 5 or 6 players will be done with the first 3 rounds by August and the rest in September.
These are 3000 point games and so take some time.
Scorekeeping has been fairly easy and no complaints about the setup being unfair so I will probably try another tourney of the same type but with only 2000 point games on smaller maps starting in September.
If you might be interested in participating look at the website at
http://home.earthlink.net/~wcompton/
and send me an e-mail.
Only prize the winner gets is being called the winner of the tournament and probably other names by the other players.
All for now,

Guys, just seen these threecat work, and thought I 'd share :)

==============================================
THE FIRST ONE

Offered by an English professor from the University of Phoenix:

The professor told his class one day: "Today we will experiment with a new form called the tandem story. The process is simple. Each person will pair off with the person sitting to his or her immediate right. As homework tonight, one of you will write the first paragraph of a short story. You will e-mail your partner that paragraph and send another copy to me. The partner will read the first paragraph and then add another paragraph to the story and send it back, also sending another copy to me.

The first person will then add a third paragraph, and so on back-and-forth. Remember to re-read what has been written each time in order to keep the story coherent. There is be absolutely NO talking outside of the e-mails, and anything you wish to say must be written in the e-mail.

The story is over when both agree a conclusion has been reached."

The following was actually turned in by two of his English students: Rebecca and Gary.

THE STORY:

(first paragraph by Rebecca)
At first, Laurie couldn't decide which kind of tea she wanted. The chamomile, which used to be her favorite for lazy evenings at home, now reminded her too much of Carl, who once said, in happier times, that he liked chamomile. But she felt she must now, at all costs, keep her mind off Carl. His possessiveness was suffocating, and if she thought about him too much her asthma started acting up again. So chamomile was out of the question.

(second paragraph by Gary)
Meanwhile, Advance Sergeant Carl Harris, leader of the attack squadron now in orbit over Skylon 4, had more important things to think about than the
neuroses of an air-headed asthmatic bimbo named Laurie with whom he had spent one sweaty night over a year ago. " A.S. Harris to Geostation 17," he
said into his transgalactic communicator. "Polar orbit established. No sign of resistance so far..." But before he could sign off a bluish particle beam flashed out of
Nowhere and blasted a hole through his ship's cargo bay. The jolt from the direct hit sent him flying out of his seat and across the cockpit.

(Rebecca)
He bumped his head and died almost immediately, but not before he felt one last pang of regret for psychically brutalizing the one woman who had ever
had feelings for him. Soon afterwards, Earth stopped its pointless hostilities towards the peaceful farmers of Skylon 4. "Congress Passes Law Permanently Abolishing War and Space Travel," Laurie read in her newspaper one morning. The news simultaneously excited her and bored her. She stared out the window, dreaming of her youth, when the days had passed unhurriedly and carefree, with no newspaper to read, no television to distract her from her sense of innocent wonder at all the beautiful things around her.. "Why must one lose one's innocence to become a woman?" she pondered wistfully.

(Gary)
Little did she know, but she had less than 10 seconds to live. Thousands of miles above the city, the Anu'udrian Mother ship launched the first of its lithium fusion missiles. The dim-witted wimpy peaceniks who pushed the Unilateral Aerospace disarmament Treaty through the congress had left Earth a defenseless target for the hostile alien empires who were determined to destroy the human race. Within two hours after the passage of the treaty the Anu'udrian ships were on course for Earth, carrying enough firepower to pulverize the entire planet. With no one to stop them, they swiftly initiated their diabolical plan. The lithium fusion missile entered the atmosphere unimpeded. The President, in his top-secret mobile submarine headquarters on the ocean floor off the coast of Guam, felt the inconceivably
massive explosion, which vaporized poor, stupid, Laurie and 85 million other Americans. The President slammed his fist on the conference table. "We can't allow this! I'm going to veto that treaty! Let's blow 'em out of the sky!"

(Rebecca)
This is absurd. I refuse to continue this mockery of literature. My writing partner is a violent, chauvinistic semi-literate adolescent.

(Gary)
Yeah? Well, you're a self-centered tedious neurotic whose attempts at writing are the literary equivalent of Valium. "Oh, shall I have chamomile tea? Or shall I have some other sort of F---ING TEA??? Oh no, I'm such an air headed bimbo who reads too many Danielle Steele novels!"

(Rebecca)
A**hole.

(Gary)
B****

(Rebecca)
F__K YOU - YOU NEANDERTHAL!

(Gary)
Go drink some tea - wh***.

(TEACHER)
A+ - I really liked this one

Following the UK government's freedom of information act you can now get access to speed camera offences registered in the last 12 months. Did you know that everytime your car goes past a speed camera even 1mph over the set limit it is registered and put on a database? You only get a ticket if you are way over the limit or (this is the bit you didn't know) if you receive over 20 near misses you will be classed as a serial offender and get a ticket the next time you go just over the limit.
This is why you hear of people being done for 34mph in a 30 limit area
whilst others doing 39 do not. You can check what has been registed
against you vehicle at the following address:

You will be asked for a password but just click on the "need a
password" link and you will be given one for future use. If there is any
data on your vehicle you can click on the camera window to see a copy of the photograph.

I am looking for an experienced player to tangle with in this scenario, "Cross or Lorraine" I am told from a reliable source (Thor) that this is a cracker of a scenario.

Prefer someone who is also playing it blind, but this is not absolute.

My shermans await..

Playing the company level Waterloo, I have noticed something that I am sure has been discussed before. I have three questions:

1. Skirmishers and density for fire purposes

Skirmishers only benefit from their skirmisher status for fire purposes if they are below a certain density of men/hex, which is 1/8 of the total possible men per hex. However, big battalions will break down into skirmish companies that are larger than the 1/8 per hex. Since they are automatically created when you hit the "S" key you can't reduce them.
When these big skirmisher companies get fired on, they get blasted apart just like formed infantry. Then, apparently, once they reach or are below the density modifier amount, they start taking fewer losses.

Has anyone discussed altering the game system so it treats a single skirmisher company as eligible for the modifier regardless of size? Or perhaps implementing the modifier on a curve, so that it is not so drastic in effect for the skirmish companies from the big battalions?

2. Skirmishers and line of sight
Formed units block line of sight over level terrain, while skirmisher units don't. However, this seems to allow a player to pack a hex with skirmish units, even past the point where they lose the skirmisher benefit, and still fire through them.

Wouldn't it make more sense to have skirmishers past a certain number block line of sight like formed units? I agree this could create a problem with people "dancing" skirmishers back and forth to create temporary lanes of fire, but maybe there is a more elegant solution someone can think of.

3. Cannons firing over and through troops.
I have been to some American Civil War re-enactments where they fire cannons like the Napoleonic artillery and I can tell you they are so loud and have a shock that I can't imagine them blasting over the heads of troops.

Yet, in my game I have a battery of French Horse Artillery two hexes from Hougomont raking the British inside, with French skirmishers in a huge pile between. I am trying to envision this battery blasting cannister across 200 yards of ground over/around masses of French skirmishers and it doesn't seem right.

This is a fine game, but it seems to have some logical issues of physics. Maybe I am missing something but any light on the above questions from you hardened veterans would be welcomed.

:sgt: Will the Campaign Series Ladder members come to attention?

glint -- front and center!

Peter joined the ladder in March of 2002. Since that time he has battled hard in eighty scenarios against thirty-nine opponents.
He has amassed a record of 15 - wins, 78 - losses, and 7 - draws. His effort is an inspiration to those who battle on, in spite of the odds. I can see that in a few more games and he will be joining the ranks of our ladder's dedicated few? :smoke:

Today he has earned the Centurion Medal - Second Class. The medal may say second class but, glint's efforts are first rate!
Let us give glint a cheer! Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah!

The virtual bar is open. No tab will be run. All drinks are on the house. Let use give tribute to this fine warrior!
